Obama und die Hilfen der Geschichte - Im Gegensatz zu seinen Vorgängern findet der neu gewählte US-Präsident seine Vorbilder nicht in heroischer Vergangenheit. Das höhere Staatspersonal wählt sich seit jeher historische Vorbilder, von denen der Atem und der Glanz traditioneller Legitimität ausgehen, zudem die gedankliche oder ideologische Devise des Regierens. Der erste und der 44. Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten, George Washington und Barack Obama, sind Kronzeugen dieser permanenten Übung. Die Vorbilder wechseln, die Suche orientiert sich an den Aufgaben der jeweiligen Zeit, oft an ihren Krisen, oft aber auch an dem Glorienschein von Epochen und Personen, heroischen wie postheroischen, deren Lichtschein der Nachfahre auf sich zu ziehen sucht... Rescuing history - Hunks of American history, much of it in Chicago, were literally destined for the dustbin over the past 40 years. Sizable collections of glass-plate photographic negatives documenting life in these United States, some from as early as the 1850s, were too bulky to store, too fragile, heavy and cumbersome to move.
